Blackjack - also referred to as 'twenty one' and 'pontoon' - is a game that is normally found in a betting house with players attempting their fortune on acquiring the elusive 'twenty one'. It's commonly believed that the game started in France during the 17th century. However, as with many other betting games the exact evolution of the game remains a mystery.

Black jack was brought to the U.S. after the French Revolution, but the game did not become favored in the betting houses until the casino offered payouts as a bonus. This was the only method that appeared to get people betting on twenty-one. One variant on the bonus payment was for a gambler to make 'twenty-one' with the black jack card (valued at ten points) and an ace (worth eleven points). With the increasing popularity of the game the payouts were canceled but the name 'pontoon' remained.

Pontoon is not just about achieving an outright 'twenty-one', but the main adventure is to defeat the dealer without going 'bust'. The casino obviously has a house edge over the gambling players in the long run, but with pontoon the player retains a bit of choice.

Since nineteen thirty one when the U.S. initial legitimized betting, black jack has grown into a classic betting house card game. Furthermore, it's the combination of both skill and math employed in black jack that has caused the game to be massively popular. Pontoon affords an alluring adventure to any scientist, mathematician or wagering player looking to analyze the scheme of the game.
